Ok this one has me stuffed.

SQL 2005 Server with all the fun stuff aswell.

HOWEVER, when attempting to run the report builder it fails when using a FQDN. (Full Qualified Domain Name)

http:\\servername\reports - No Issues

http:\\ipaddress\reports - No Issues

http:\\servername.domain.com.au\reports - Can Access, reports run fine but fails to run the report builder.

The error deatails are as follows:

Report Builder 401

When attempting to run Report Builder I get error below. After reading
earlier posts I have tried several combinations on the File Security
properties of the 6 Report Builder files and seem to get the furthest (I get
the Application Run - Security Warning dialog) while enabling Anonymous
access using the Report Server service account and also using Authenticated
access (Integrated Windows Authentication). I also tried changing the
RSWebApplication.Config from FullTrust to Partial Trust but that did not work.
Thanks in advance for any help
Please note that unlike earlier posts I have a Win32Exception at the end of
the error detail.

Report Builder - Entities list behaving poorly.

While attempting to create a new report, I came across what I feel is some
odd behavior. I select an item in the Entities list, then drag an item from
the newly populated Fields list to the report area. Once I drop the field
item, the Entities list changes scope showing only the Entity from which I
made a selection and any items within it. I can't get back up to the main
list unless I undo the operation.
Being relatively new to this domain, I considered that I might be expecting
behavior that I shouldn't be, however, when I checked the tutorial provided,
the instructions led me to believe I was right in being perplexed, thus this
post.
Anyone have info?
Thank you,
Scottits a normal behavior.
The model only present entities which can be used regarding what you
currently have in the report.
of your entities have no links between them, there are not available to the
user.
This insure that the user will not select unrelated entities and generates
bad queries. (like full outer join queries)
You have to create some roles between your entities to allow the user to go
from 1 entity to another.

From my initial investigations there has to actually be a foreign key on the
tables in SQL Server.
If this is the case and you can't have "logical" relationships between
entities, than this will make things very difficult for a lot of people.
It will make report builder unusable for databases with complex
relationships between entities and legacy systems.
You should be able to have no actual foreign keys if you don't want to
(however bad practice this is).

the system doesnt support complex relationships and other business rules.
Reportbuilder is (more) designed to give access to a well formatted
database, I mean a database with a "beautyfull" schema (good and simple
relationship).
Also, Reportbuilder is designed to be very intuitive for the end user. so
when the user start to play with the customer name, reportbuilder will
display only customer's related information because the MUST go through
these known entities to continue his report.
A user can't select a customer name and a product name as is, the user MUST
select the customer name, then the sales then the product, because the
question is "what are the product sales to my customers?"
the job you have to do is to create this easy to use reportbuilder model in
front of your database to insure that an end user can use your database
without any SQL knowledge.
if your database is too complex, you have to work hard to generate a report
builder model.

for users without much or any knowledge of SQL or the particular database.
The bit I don't understand is why we are so limited in what we can do when
building the model.
This is a layer of abstraction and so it shouldn't matter if the actual
database is complicated underneath as long as the final model you present the
user with is straight forward.
Whats the point of having the layer of abstraction if everything has to be
in the database, you might as well report directly from the database.
As far as you know, is there definitely no way to say 2 tables are related
in your model that don't have an actual foreign key in SQL Server?

in the DSV you can create links that doesn't exists in the database, you can
add a layer of queries and other calculated columns etc...
So if there is no foreign key in the database, you can create a logical
relationship in the DSV.
you can use unrelated tables in the model.
but if there is no links, then the user can't use these 2 tables at the same
time in report builder.

I was trying to do it through the designer view of the report model.
I didn't realise I wanted to be in the designer view of the Data Source View
instead.

Report Builder

I am attempting to create a report using the report builder. I can see the button for the report builder on my report server but nothing happens when you click it. I also attempted to go directly to the url but once again nothing.

Finally, I attempted to run the application directly from the file structure and in doing so there I got the following errors. Could not find file 'reportbuilder.chm.deploy'. I created a junk text file with the same file name and attemted to run the app again and this time I got a error that said: Could not find file 'reportbuilder.exe.deploy'. After that I created another junk text file and named it the same as that.

This is part of the errors that I recieved. This doesn't suprise me based on the hack I did to get to this point. Below is a summary of the errors, details of these errors are listed later in the log.
* Activation of Reporting Services\ReportServer\ReportBuilder\ReportBuilder.application resulted in exception. Following failure messages were detected:
+ Exception occurred loading manifest from file ReportBuilder.exe: the manifest may not be valid or the file could not be opened.
+ File ReportBuilder.exe is not a valid Portable Executable (PE) file.
+ PE file does not have enough data.

I'm not sure what the overall issue is and why these files would be missing. Any guidance in relation to this situation would be great. Thanks.

You can run it from the file system by launching ReportBuilder.exe directly (instead of ReportBuilder.application).

I'm not sure why URL access and the Report Builder button in Report Manager are not responding. Can you give any more details about your configuration?

I have an identical problem.
These are the details I get when running the application directly from the server.
(It does work when I log in on another PC with the same credentials)

You cannot launch Report Builder by double-clicking the ReportBuilder.application file from the file system -- it must be accessed through the report server URL. (If you really want to, I believe you could just add ".deploy" to the end of RB.exe and RB.chm, and then launch the app, but I've never tried this myself, and renaming the files would break URL access.)

The more basic problem is the non-responsiveness of the Report Builder button in Report Manager. What happens when you enter the URL for RB directly into the browser address bar:

http://hostname/reportserver/reportbuilder/reportbuilder.application

|||Hi Bob -

I've got the same problem with an unresponsive 'Report Builder' button (in IE6). Basically, nothing happens when the button is pressed. Also, entering the url you provided does nothing as well (I tried the 'localintranet' one as well).

I'm have full admin rights on the client machine, and to the report server, and the .NET framework is installed on the client.

Interestingly, when I click the button from Firefox, it downloads the ReportBuilder.application manifest (but then can't I run it, as you've noted above).

Thanks in advance for any insight you might have (and for many past insights on your blog),

I was getting an error message launching Report Builder (see below). The following is a workaround that works:

1. Upgrade your SSRS server to SP2.

2. Copy "c:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.3\Reporting Services\ReportServer\ReportBuilder\ReportBuilder.exe" from the server to your desktop on your laptop.

3. Double click ReportBuilder.exe from your desktop on your laptop.

4. Enter the server URL of http://YourServerName/ReportServer

5. You should be up and running.

Here was the error message I'm getting when I try to launch Report Builder from Report Manager.

I haven't tried reinstalling the .NET 2.0 framework and I'm not going to bother because this is the only problem I've been having with it.

|||Hi Bob -

|||Hi Bob -

Have a look at the following thread: http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=766354&SiteID=1

Reinstallation of .Net 2.0 solved the problem for me.

I'm also having the same issue and I need a fix asap.

I have .net 1.1, 2.0, 3.0 installed and IE 7.

Tried adding .exe and .deploy to the end but only received the following:

|||re-installing .net (2.0 & 3.0) didn't work...|||The .deploy files are the deployed versions of the files in the folder. I managed to get the ReportBuilder.application served through the browser by copying the files it was requesting and renaming them with a .deploy extension. Each file then had to be given individual Read permissions in IIS.

Hope that helps,
