Report Designer vs. Report Builder

Is it possible to associate a VS Report Designer report with a VS Report
Modeler model? In other words make a report that is deployed from Visual
Studio editable using Report Builder, or even the other way around.

you can open an RDL created in report builder into VS

but you can't allow a user to edit a report created into VS with report
builder.

Report Designer (VS2005)? If yes, can you please redirect me to it?

report builder not launched once i click the ssrs 2005 report builder. what is the reason?
think you might need to be a bit more descriptive than this!

MS SQL Server Reporting Services is one option. It allows you to build
the RDL directly from within ASP.NET, in a designer solution, etc.
Also, I have worked with Dundas (www.Dundas.com) in the past; however
you would need to design this one. There are several other options
available; however, a majority of them will require designing the
report. There's always the option to use just basic Gridviews, which
can be exported to Excel, Word, PowerPoint, etc and don't particulary
have to be designed. Hope this helps.

So, the table wants to build as a report model must have primary key?

Report Builder: Is there a way to filter a filter?

Dear Anyone,

We have a report model that connects to a single table. Some of the columns of the table contains blank values which is regarded as a valid value in our reports.

We have a requirement that the filter selection should not contain any blank values. They do not want to include a blank value for the users to choose but if the users decide not to use a filter, those blank values should still be included in the report.

Does anyone have any suggestions on how to do this in RB? We already made this work in RS2k5 but we can't seem to find any way to do this in RB.

No, there is no way to control the list of values presented to the user. It is always a list of all existing values in the underlying database.

Report Builder: how to create a static report?

I have created a report based on a report builder model using Visual Studio.
This report will replace the default drill report.
so after I have published my report in report server, I'll modify my model
(model properties) to setup the drill through report of my customer entity.
When I save the new config I receive this error:
rsInvalidModelDrillthroughReport
/Models/DrillReports/Report1 is not a valid drill report.
so the question is, how to create a valid drill report'
there is some particular parameters to setup?
the help don't describe this.
any sample anywhere?

Report Builder: Filter drop down list unspecified

I have a report model which functioned correctly until I copied the project
over to another server and changed the data source for it. I can still build
a report that returns the correct data, but when I add a filter to the report
data, the ddl for the filter never loads the data and says 'unspecified'.

Report Builder: Error 401

I'm looking for some help/suggestions on how to solve an authentication problem we're having running the ad-hoc reporting tool (Report Builder). Here's the background:

1. It actually installs a client footprint the first time it is launched, and requires .NET 2.0 framework on the client. Authentication to the Report Server is through Windows NT authentication, then additional Reporting Service security controls what rights the accounts have (including the right to use Report Builder).

2. Currently, Windows NT authentication works for providing access to the Report Server, running reports published to the server, and doing other admin functions related to Reporting Services.

3. We are having a problem with accounts not being able to run Report Builder even though they have the correct rights, and it appears to be related to the specific PC being used. Serveral of us have accounts that used to work on our PCs, but no longer work. But the same account will work when used on another PC (which was actually in the same DNR subnet). I've also had someone use my account on their machine, and it worked. We've had others that have never been able to run Report Builder, even though they have the rights to do so. Bellow are error details returned to the client when trying to run the application.

4. Since the problem seems to be machine related and one of the client requirements is the .NET 2.0 framework, I tried un-installing and re-installing this, but it didn't correct the problem.

5. This problem occurs both on both the development server and the new server we will be using for production.

Not sure what to do next...any ideas? Would a network trace help? Or is there any additional info on the Report Server log that would help? Microsoft support?

Now, I am able to provide for a hyperlink enabled column from the static reports designed using the Report Server Project. I have used the Navigation --> Jump To URL property of TextBox for this.

But the users dont want to depend on static reports and need this to be available via Report Builder.

I tried to provide for the <a href="somepage.aspx">xxx</a> from the named query in the datasource view, but when I run the report, the Reporting Service HTMLEncodes the tags and displays everything as text.

Report Builder: Date filter, Relative Date

I have a date filter, and I default it to first day this month and last day this month under relative date, when I run it it givis me error:

The Value expression for the report parameter ‘FromDate’ contains an error: [BC30456] 'Date' is not a member of 'Integer'. (rsCompilerErrorInExpression)

OK, I narrow down what cause this, my date Fields are standard date type. I have 2 dates From Date and To Date, and I put those in filter with default values:

From Date : first day this month, To Date: last day this month

I also have a Textbox with value: =parameters!FromDate.Value

Because I need to display what is being filter on the output, but that is what cause the error, if I use Today or (n) months ago as default, it works.

I doubt that is causing the problem unless you maybe have a number format string for the textbox?

I have used Report Builder to enable user to do Ad-Hoc Report that has
been great so far, but I have unique requirement for below table/view:
Month Headcount
================== January-06 45
February-06 41
March-06 43
April-06 42

(etc...)
Dec-06 42
Above table represents how many employees, one company/department has
during Month column. In January-06, there is 45 employees,
February-06, there is 44 employees, and so on.
If user choose to show Headcount attribute, Report Builder should
display each month headcount. The current problem is on the aggregate.
for example, report should show Headcount for Quarter 1 as 43, which
is headcount for March-06 (how many employees I have at the end of
Quarter 1), Quarter 2 should display 30, which is headcount for
June-06, and for Year of 2006 should be 42 (at Dec-06). There will be
more complexity: if now is still in the month of November 06 and no
data for December yet, report should show headcount of November 06 as
headcount for Year of 2006.
I don't think default available aggregates which are: Total, Average,
Max, Min, able to do this.
Q1, correct value should be 40 (March-06)
If I use Total Aggregate, it will be 99.
If I use Average, it will be 24.75
If I use Max, it will be 45.
If I use Min, it will be 41.
I need an aggregate that show number from last record in the dataset.
Is there any possible way how to do this? Any input is appreciated.

Reporting Services actually supports "Last" Aggregate (using regular
RDL file, e.g. developed using Visual Studio), which I think can solve
the problem. I notice that we can use
Count,CountDistinct,StDev,StDevP,Var, or VarP, in the Report Builder
editor itself, but there is no First or Last available. Does anyone
knows how to use this "Last" aggregate in report builder?

Report Builder/SRS connectio to Postgres

By reading the forums, it looks like ODBC is out of picture.

Can they use some sort of .net provider etc.

Report Builder currently works only with MS SQL databases. Semantic queries produced by Report Builder are tranbslated to TSQL and translation uses some of TSQL specifics. So sending those queries directly to any database server other than SQL will not work.

You can either pump data into MSSQL or use linked servers.
If you pump data, make sure that db schema in MSSQL has valid PKs/FKs
If you use linked servers or OPENDATASOURCE you will need to manually craft DSV, specify FKs/PKs and the generate model off it (all is done in Model Designer).

so i'll try and answer it.
i think you want to use the drill through function. So right click on the
item/text box/graph or whatever you want to drill through from and select
properties > Advanced > navigation > jump to report > pick a report to jump
to > parameters and assign the parameters.
right hope that answers your question, although this is a solution based on
rs2000 but can't imagine it is much differnt for rs2005.

The Click through feature is a report builder capability ("infinite click
through") which allow a user to navigate in the data without having to
create a new report by himself.
When the user click (for example) on the # Sales, the system automatically
display the list of these sales with the customer name for example. then the
user click on the customer name and a new report is automatically created to
display the complete detail information of this particular customer. then
the user can click and click etc... number of created report only 1! the
first, all the other reports are created automatically.
but... the administrator can play a little around this by adding information
in the model to open a specific report instead-of the automatically
generated, but this feature appear to works only with a report created with
report builder.
so my question is: can I setup a report builder model to open a standard
reporting services report instead-of the report builder auto-generated one?
and this is a 2005 feature, not a 2000 one.
if you have never tested this, try it now!!!! its really a excellent

My question:
Does the end-user reporting tool (report builder) in Sql Server 2005 exist
in the Standard Version or is it only in the Enterprise Version?
I have found a couple of conflicting articles on the web.

Flessner announced that Reporting Services will be included in all editions

How can I access recordsets from Stored Procedures and/or views instead of
tables from the database. I need to limit the amount of data a user can
access but the only entities showing up in the Explorer are tables.Hi,
You can access from tables and views, what ever filter criteria you can give
it in views. Go to "Data Source Views" in the Report model project and click
on add existing items from your datasource you should see tables and views.

add on client development tool accessible via the
http://YourReportServer/Reports page called "Report Builder". This tool
allowes the user to create adhoc reports without having to write 1 line of
SQL.

Report Builder, SSAS, and Many-to-Many Relationships

Does Report Builder handle many-to-many relationships within an SSAS cube correctly? I can't seem to get it to. Using Adventure Works, here's an example of the problem I'm seeing.

- Create a new report in RB, opening the Adventure Works DW model

- Select one of the perspectives that includes the Sales Reason dimension (like Direct Sales)

- Select the Sales Reason entity in the Entities list and put the Sales Reason Type attribute into the report (making Sales Reason the primary entity)

- The Entities list will be reduced to show the Adventure Works Sales Reasons relationship (which maps to that underlying measure group)

- If you select the Adventure Works Sales Reasons relationship, you’ll see the Internet Sales Order Details entity below it

- If you select the Sales Order Details entity, however, you’ll only see the attributes that are in that dimension; you won’t see any of the measures that exist in the measure groups that are related to it

- Based on that fact, you can’t get to any of the measures in the cube (since the Sales Reason dimension is related to the other measure groups only through M-to-M relationships)

Of course, it may be that I just don't understand how the auto-generated report model for the SSAS cube is exposing the relationships and the entities that correspond to the Sales Reason dimension, the Sales Reasons measure group (the intermediate measure group for the M-to-M relationships to the other measure groups), etc.

Anyone seen this before or know that this is defined behavior? Seems that for any SSAS cube that includes M-to-M relationships, Report Builder just won't work...

Unfortunately, the SMDL model in the Report Builder sometimes gets in the way when SSAS is used as a data source. To get around similar limitations, I added calculated members in the cube which mapped to the original measures and I assigned them to the first measure group. The net result is that all measures were mapped to only one measure group. Then, I had to manually change the SMDL model to hide the measure groups/measures I don't need.|||

I understand most of the limitations with RB against an SSAS-based SMDL model. However, I've never tested trying to build a report that includes dimensions/measure groups that are related via a many-to-many relationship. The fact that this doesn't seem to work is troubling, so I'm trying to confirm that it is indeed an issue (or bug?) with RB and not just me doing something silly... Have you ever tried to create a report using RB that hits the Sales Reason dimension in the AW cube? If not, give it a try and let me know what your experience is...

Not the latter for sure . M-M relationships is not the only case. The same thing happens if you have a multi-grain relationship, e.g. Sales Target in the Adventure Works. Then the model drops the Date relationship so you can't slice by date. I'd recommend you file a bug report with product services for all Report Builder issues that you encounter (I've done my fair share doing so). The more people complain about the SSAS integration scenario the more likely is to get fixed/improved. Meanwhile, consider opening the SMDL model and adding the dropped relationships manually. This isn't a supported scenario but it will probably get you going.

Report Builder, limiting the Dimensions

I created a report model based over the cube. The problme is, it retrieves all dimensions from the cube regardless those are checked or not even in the prespective.

It does work with Measure but not with Dimensions.

Appreciate if some one can drop a line here and help me out.

You need to make manual changes to the model for this to happen.

1. Create a new Report Builder project.

2. Save the auto-generated SMDL file from Report Manager.

3. Add it to the Report Builder project.

4. Open the model in the Model Designer and select the root Model node.

5. On the right pane, right-click on the perspective desired and choose Edit.

6. In the Edit Perspective dialog box, unselect all dimensions that you don't need.

7. When you are done, go back to the Report Manager and update the model (click the Update button).

The model is generated from the cube... It is not over the relational database where I can create and edit prepectives.

I limit the Dimension as you mentioned but now I cann't generate the report... The reason is, somehow all the Dimensions need to be selected in the Model...else it is not going to work.... Updating the Model back to original state rectify the problem.

Can you provide repro steps with the AdventureWorks cube and include a report definition of a Report Builder report that cannot be generated?

|||Report Builder models generated against an Analysis Services cube cannot be edited using Model Designer. Also, modifying the report-model (.smdl) file directly is not supported.

I am well aware of the Report Builder-SSAS limitations and the fact that the modifying the report-model is not supported. However, when nothing else helps you don't have much choice unless you take the unsupported road, do you? You should be able to open the smdl file in a Report Builder project, make the changes I mentioned, and update the model back successfully. If something doesn't work, please let us know what it is and provide repro steps if possible.
