Our current VS2003 installed on 2000 Sever sp4 and Reporting Service
will not longer interface.
When trying to open a report project we recieve the error "Th
application for Project XXX.rptproj is not installed" "Make sure th
application for project type (.rptproj) is installed".
Has anyone ever seen this error before or have any suggestions?
We have built a number of reports and deployed them, but we are n
longer able to open the project to make modifications. We are als
unable to create a new report project without receiving the sam
errorDid you install or remove any software recently? Did you try reinstalling
Report Designer?

Report Designer doesn't work

Hello everybody
I have some problems with the report designer in visual studio 2003. When
I'm working on a new report project and I had defined my data source and my
data sets, and I had have a report made, if I want to change my report (for
example: create a new list or table or try to modify some property of an
element) when I go to view the report with the new changes, this changes are
not in my report.
Well, then I open the .rdl file to see if the changes are in the script but
they aren't.
The only way I found to make the changes in my report is to open the .rdl
file directly (with the notepad, for example), and write the new properties.
Can anybody help me? It's very strange because the report designer works in
the begining of the project but It doesn't work from a moment untill the end.
I have to delete all the project and make all again.I haven't run into this myself, but I would only make the obvious suggestion
of installing all service packs for Reporting Services. (SP2)

seen this. The only thing I have seen is that sometimes making a change to a
dataset is not picked up if you exit without first going to layout and
clicking the save button. What happens is the dirty bit is not being set, RS
designer does not know that the dataset design changed. So, I got used to
clicking on the save button every time I made a change.
Other than that though, you should not be having any problems.
One question, are you changing the rdl directly while in VS or are you using
the visual designers.

times where the same thing I ran the last time came back unless I hit refresh

One of the properties I try to change is to add a reference of a custom
assembly and for this I use the visual designer. If I add the reference with
the report properties window, it doesn't work. For example I try to change
the author of the report whith the report properties window, I write a new
author and y acept the changes and then the window closes. I open the same
window again and the author's name is empty. If I want to change really the
autor of the report y have to write the changes directly in the .rdl file.

Report Deployment Problem on SQL 2005

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to deploy my Report Project on SQL 2005 on my machine from Visual Studio itself, but I keep getting this error:
"The Report Server Web Service is unable to access secure information in the report server. Please verify that the WebServiceAccount is specified correctly in the report server config file."
Although I specified the WebServiceAccount in the rsreportserver.config file, using an administrative account, but still facing the same problem :s.
Any idea what so ever?
ThanksI was hoping someone would reply to you on this problem. I am having a very similar problem of not being able to deploy reports to the Report Server, using the June SQL Server CTP.

When trying to deploy Company Sales.rdl or any of the other sample reports to the Report Server, from Visual Studio 2005, this error message appears (see below). Where should I start to troubleshoot the problem? Thank you.

A connection could not be made to the report server http://localhost/reportserver. (Microsoft Report Designer)

|||Hi everyone,

I managed to solve the problem at my side, this post was very helpfull:
http://forums.microsoft.com/msdn/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=58665

For my case, the easiest way was to reinstall SQL 2005 CTP again in one shot, as installing it in multiple phases caused the problem that I faced.
In addition, I had to give write authority to the (Network Services) to the ASP.NET Temporary files directory.

Hope this will be helpfull.|||I also had the same problem and it was resolved by reinstalling all components of SQL 2005 CTP in one go.|||
Solution to this problem is

1) Open Configure Report Server Tool
2) Update 'Web Service Identity' tab to reflect Asp .Net account on the machine.
For Eg. machineName\ASPNET
3) Click Apply Button, This will update WebServiceAccount tag in your report server configuration file 'rsreportserver.config'.

Hope this helps.

Thanks,

Hi it sounds to me the AspNet user or the user used in your dataset don't have access to your SRS database( "ReportServer" DB) . Check the permissions of the SQL Reporting Services database. Also you can't deploy to a server not running the SRS Server, unless you are on a SQL reporting server as localhost . I assume you clicked 'play' in VS.Net ? You need to deploy to a SRS Server.

Report Dataset is lost once the Data Tab is clicked

1. Created a New Report Server Wizard Project using OLAP as datasource
2. Gone through the wizard steps to generate a matrix report.
3. All is fine and the report gets previewed. I build and deploy the report.
4. Now , if I need to add a new column I go to data tab of the report. Realize that the query is lost and now the report throws exception like the following when rebuild:

" [rsFieldReference] The Value expression for the textbox ‘Base_Premium’ refers to the field ‘Base_Premium’. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."
5. No idea why the query given at the query builder stage of the wizard is lost

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Create a new Report Server Wizard Project
2. Create a new datasource using OLAP as datasource
3. Add the report data fields (query builder)
4. Select matrix report format and any style
5. Select the row, col and data fields.
6. complete the wizard.
7. Save, build and deploy the project
8. Preview the report.
9. Now try to add a new column to the report by clicking the data tab.

Actual Results:

The sql prepared from the query builder is lost and all the columns previously selected disappear. The report throws exception in preview mode something like :

" [rsFieldReference] The Value expression for the textbox ‘Base_Premium’ refers to the field ‘Base_Premium’. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."

Expected Results:

Should be able to modify the report any number of times after it is initially generated.

Report connection fails with DNS name

Hi,

I am facing problem while setting connection string in Report Service project.
Problem is when I specify DNS name instead of machine name as the Server in the connection string.

When I specify DNS name in the connection string it gives error that "A connection cannot be made.Ensure that the server is running" on click of "Test Connection"
Also I am not able to view reports directly through IE. I.e. http://<DNS_NAME>/Reports.
When I access Reports, it prompts me to enter username/password. Even after specifying valid username, it shows me the prompt again n again.

Is there some known issue with Reporting Service or with IIS setting not able to connect to a DNS name? I did not face with any issue when
I specified DNS name in the connection string of Analysis Service project.

Did anyone encountered DNS related problem with SQL Server 2005 Reporting Service?

We also verified that:
1: Ping with both machine name and DNS name returns same result.
2: nslookup with both machine name and DNS name resolves to same IP.

3: Tried putting the DNS name in the hosts file.

Eagerly awaiting some positive reply.

Note: I am working with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.

No replies yetSad

We are stuck up with this issue since quite some time.

still waiting for some positive inputs.

After doing some investigation, I have found that the issue is with Analysis server not able to connect using the DNS name (Note: my Reporting Service proj is connecting to Analysis services datasource). When I connect to Analysis server through SQL Server management studio (by def which uses Win authentication), and specify machine name (ABC) in Server then it connects but if I give DNS name (XYZ.PWR.COM) it gives me the following error:

Is this problem because of the kerberos authentication that Analysis server uses to authenticate?

Can anyone please help me in solving this issue.

Eagerly awaiting some positive reply.

Note: I am working with SQL Server 2005 Standard Edition.

If I connect to Reporting Service using DNS name then I get the following error:

A connection to the report server failed. Most likely, you do not have permission to connect to the computer. You should either try to connect using a report server URL for the Server name, or if the Distributed COM Users group exists on the remote computer, verify that you are a member. When I ping with machine name (ABC) and DNS name (XYZ.PWR.COM), both resolves to the same IP.
C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping ABC

Pinging ABC.corp.abctech.com [xx.x.xx.xx] with 32 bytes of d

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>ping XYZ.PWR.COM

Pinging XYZ.PWR.COM [xx.x.xx.xx] with 32 bytes of data:

Is this problem because of the kerberos authentication that Analysis server uses to authenticate?

I am able to connect to the Database engine using DNS name (but using SQL Server authentication).
Also I was able to view the reportserver and reports page by changing the IIS authentication to NTLM.
But finally I am not able to view the reports.

Can anyone please help me in solving this issue.

Awatiitng some positive reply.

Report Builder: Filter drop down list unspecified

I have a report model which functioned correctly until I copied the project
over to another server and changed the data source for it. I can still build
a report that returns the correct data, but when I add a filter to the report
data, the ddl for the filter never loads the data and says 'unspecified'.
I'm not sure what the problem could be. Any ideas? ThanksAfter doing some hunting around I found this:
One of the most commonly used features in ad-hoc reporting is filtering. To
add filters to a report, select a field, and then click the Filter button. If
the InstanceSelection attribute enables drop-down, filter values will be
automatically populated. In article
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa964121.aspx#adhocrptsol_topic5
This is not the issue asthe InstanceSelection property is properly configured.

Report Builder question

Hello there. We are having some problems in Reporting Services.

First off, we are creating a 'Dashboard' project (using Visual Studio 2005, Dundas Charts and SQL Server) that will display charts showing how their company is doing. On the Dashboard, we are also using the Report Builder so the users can create their own reports and see exactly what they want to see.

Before we had a problem with every company being able to access all databases (we wanted to limit it so that their company could ONLY see their data). We fixed that by adding a parameter to the end of the report builder path in the asp .net code.

What we want to do now is limit what directory they can save their reports too. Right now, they are able to save the report in any companies directory.

Remember, this is in Reporting Services, so it's a little different than Windows folder permissions.

If this isn't clear enough, let me know and i'll try to explain it a little clearer.

Thanks

Folders can be security-controlled using Windows or custom security. If the end user doesn't have rights to a folder, they won't eve see that folder.|||Are you saying that you can use the Windows permissions inside of the SQL Server Reporting Services? I've looked around and have not found anything on how to limit users to specific folders inside of RS.|||Open Report Manager and navigate to any folder. Go to the folder properties and then Security. You can define security policies for Windows users and/or groups.

Report Builder and Oracle Database?

Hi,
I'm trying to use the report builder for the first time.
Is there a way to create an Oracle datasource in a report model project
?
Thanks,
PannaHi Panna,
AFAIK, Oracle is not supported currently, although it may be supported in a
future.
You can try linking the Oracle server to SQL Server using the Linked Servers
option in SQL Server. However, I've not tried this and I'm not sure if it
will work, actually. I'm not sure all the T-SQL syntax generated by the
Semantic Engine is available for linked servers.
HTH, however.
