Report does not display the same as in the Preview window in Visual Studio

After formatting the report and making it look like I want too in the
Preview window of Visual Studio. I deploy the report to the web server
and when I open it - the web rendering (formatting) does not duplicate
what I see in the Preview window. It looks like it's adding extra rows
between the objects and is not following the vertical alignment that
was used in Visual Studio.
Does anyone have ideas on what could be causing this?
Thanks..I do. Verify if there are textboxes overlaping each other. In preview
windows this issue do not cause problem, but at render time, it does.

Report Designer vs. Report Builder

Is it possible to associate a VS Report Designer report with a VS Report
Modeler model? In other words make a report that is deployed from Visual
Studio editable using Report Builder, or even the other way around.

Report Designer other than Visual Studio

Hi NG
I am not that familiar with RS yet, but it seems to me that the only
reasonable Report Designer is Visual Studio.
We have the situation that the business will design and maintain (the design
of ) the reports on their own. As we don't want to install VS in the
business, I am looking for anoter report designer. Does anybody know a
suitable alternative?

PeterOne alternative can be our Ad-Hoc designer, which is for end users who are
not developers. It is not yet complete, but it is already can produce
reports, open for editing, publish them on existing reporting server, etc.
It is not going to be expensive.

Report designer not in VS 2003

I have Reporting services 2000 (Version 8.00.1038.00) installed (installed with installation of MS CRM) and visual studio 2003 installed however, do not have the business intelligence report designer available. Where can I obtain the report designer addin? We don't have a RD 2000 CD. Is what I need available via download?

Try getting the trial version of reporting services & installing the developer components. Not sure if these expire though. You may need to purchase a license for Reporting Services if you would like to use in a production environment. There doesn't appear to be a download for just the designer components for vs 2003, only 2005 Express.

Or you may be able to use fyiReporting or a "common text editor" though I'm not sure who has enough time to edit RDL by hand.

You must also have access to Microsoft CRM to deploy the report.

Report Designer installation location

We are installing Reporting Services 2000 on a new SQL Server 2000 box and
get a message indicating that Visual Studio 2003 needs to be installed,
otherwise it will install RS2000 without Report Designer.
We currently have RS2000 installed on a SQL Server box with VS2003 and it
works fine.
This time we would like to do it differently and install RS2000 on a SQL
Server 2000 box, but install VS2003 on a development workstation. How can we
do this and still get Report Designer installed on the workstation? Don't we
need RD to get all the RS controls, etc?

If I recall, the Report Designer for the 2000 version requires Visual
Studio to be installed on the same box. This is not the case in SSRS
2005, since it installs the Business Intelligence Development Studio
Environment (which includes the Report Designer) as long as SQL Server
2005 is on the local box. Most likely, you will need to install VS
2003. Sorry that I could not be of greater assistance.

Report Designer doesn't work

I have some problems with the report designer in visual studio 2003. When
I'm working on a new report project and I had defined my data source and my
data sets, and I had have a report made, if I want to change my report (for
example: create a new list or table or try to modify some property of an
element) when I go to view the report with the new changes, this changes are
not in my report.
Well, then I open the .rdl file to see if the changes are in the script but
they aren't.
The only way I found to make the changes in my report is to open the .rdl
file directly (with the notepad, for example), and write the new properties.
Can anybody help me? It's very strange because the report designer works in
the begining of the project but It doesn't work from a moment untill the end.
I have to delete all the project and make all again.I haven't run into this myself, but I would only make the obvious suggestion
of installing all service packs for Reporting Services. (SP2)

dataset is not picked up if you exit without first going to layout and
clicking the save button. What happens is the dirty bit is not being set, RS
designer does not know that the dataset design changed. So, I got used to
clicking on the save button every time I made a change.
Other than that though, you should not be having any problems.
One question, are you changing the rdl directly while in VS or are you using
the visual designers.

times where the same thing I ran the last time came back unless I hit refresh
button.

One of the properties I try to change is to add a reference of a custom
assembly and for this I use the visual designer. If I add the reference with
the report properties window, it doesn't work. For example I try to change
the author of the report whith the report properties window, I write a new
author and y acept the changes and then the window closes. I open the same
window again and the author's name is empty. If I want to change really the
autor of the report y have to write the changes directly in the .rdl file.

Can I maybe use a cut down version to design forms, as we cannot afford the
upgrade fees.

requires VS.NET 2003 (any edition) to use the Report Designer. VB.NET, by
itself is not enough.

Report Deployment Problem on SQL 2005

Hi everyone,
I'm trying to deploy my Report Project on SQL 2005 on my machine from Visual Studio itself, but I keep getting this error:
"The Report Server Web Service is unable to access secure information in the report server. Please verify that the WebServiceAccount is specified correctly in the report server config file."
Although I specified the WebServiceAccount in the rsreportserver.config file, using an administrative account, but still facing the same problem :s.

I managed to solve the problem at my side, this post was very helpfull:

For my case, the easiest way was to reinstall SQL 2005 CTP again in one shot, as installing it in multiple phases caused the problem that I faced.
In addition, I had to give write authority to the (Network Services) to the ASP.NET Temporary files directory.

Hope this will be helpfull.|||I also had the same problem and it was resolved by reinstalling all components of SQL 2005 CTP in one go.|||
Solution to this problem is

1) Open Configure Report Server Tool
2) Update 'Web Service Identity' tab to reflect Asp .Net account on the machine.
For Eg. machineName\ASPNET
3) Click Apply Button, This will update WebServiceAccount tag in your report server configuration file 'rsreportserver.config'.

I managed to solve the problem at my side, this post was very helpfull:

For my case, the easiest way was to reinstall SQL 2005 CTP again in one shot, as installing it in multiple phases caused the problem that I faced.
In addition, I had to give write authority to the (Network Services) to the ASP.NET Temporary files directory.

Hope this will be helpfull.|||I also had the same problem and it was resolved by reinstalling all components of SQL 2005 CTP in one go.|||
Solution to this problem is

1) Open Configure Report Server Tool
2) Update 'Web Service Identity' tab to reflect Asp .Net account on the machine.
For Eg. machineName\ASPNET
3) Click Apply Button, This will update WebServiceAccount tag in your report server configuration file 'rsreportserver.config'.

Report deployment error in SharePoint Integration mode

I get the following error when I am trying to deploy Report from Visual Studio Report Designer.

SRSS is configured in SharePoint integration mode. Configuration is mentioned below.

Configuration is as follows.

Web front end server.

MOSS 2007 Standard edition 64 bit.

SQL Reporting Service Add in 64 bit.

SQL Server

MS SQL server 2005 32 bit with sp2.

Reporting Services configured.

WSS 3.0 32 bit required for configuration, of SRSS in integrated mode.

Windows service and web service are both running under a domain account. The account is a SharePoint Admininstrator. The account is also in Administrators, Reporting Server user and Web service group and also has a dbo rights on database.

To publish a report to a SharePoint site configured for SharePoint integration, you must verify that the report project properties in Report Designer point to the SharePoint site. All references to servers, reports, shared data sources, and resources must be fully qualified URLs. The TargetServerURL property must be a URL to a SharePoint site. The TargetDataSourceFolder and TargetReportFolder properties must be URLs to a SharePoint library or library folder. You must have Member or Owner permission on the SharePoint site to set the properties on the project.

To publish a report to a SharePoint site

1. In SQL Server Development Studio, open an existing or new Report Server project.

2. From the Project menu, click Properties. The <project> Property Pages dialog box opens.

3. Choose the Configuration you use to publish to a SharePoint site. For example, Active(Debug) or Production.

4. In the Deployment section, for the optional TargetDataSourceFolder, type a URL to a library or library folder. For example, http://TestServer/TestSite/Documents/DataSources.

5. For TargetReportFolder, type a fully qualified URL to a library or library folder. For example, http://TestServer/TestSite/Documents.

6. For TargetServerURL, type a URL to a SharePoint top-level site or sub-site. If you do not specify a site, the default top-level site is used. For example, http://servername, http://servername/site or http://servername/site/subsite..

7. Click OK.

8. In Solution Explorer, right-click on the report you want to publish, and click Deploy. The report is published to the location specified in TargetReportFolder.

I have SQL 2005 sp2 as a seperate server from my sharepoint server. I was running reports in native mode and converted to integrated. I am using domain accounts for windows and web services. I have all green checks in reports configuration. If I browse to http://sqlserver/reportserver/ I get the following error:

The report server has encountered a configuration error. See the report server log files for more information. (rsServerConfigurationError) Get Online Help

I don't see anything in the log - but would be happy to post entries if someone can spot my error in them.

It should contain more details about your problem.

Are you using "Windows Integrated" or "Trusted Accounts" Authentication Mode?

My issue i guess was because of the double hop between my Reporting Server and SharePoint server. Anyways now i have Reporting Server and MOSS both on same machine and the problem seem to go away on its own.

Now I can't deploy any reports, when I try Visual Studio almost hangs, tries for about 5 minutes to deploy a single report and then fails with an error message:

Check for your IE settings. I think that must have changed.

In the client machine, IE Options -> Connection -> LAN settings that - check if both these 2
options were checked/enabled -
1. Automatically detect settings
2. Use Automatic Configuration Script
The option #2 was causing HTTP request from VS go through the proxy server and
passing anonymous request (401)

Or any other Security settings from a machine where deployment works fine.

first time view report its print ok but if i open report again with differnet parameters its showing correct data in report view but after i click print and choose printer it still print the first report

why these happen?I've seen this problem before, a few years ago.
I don't work at the same place now, so I can't go back into SourceSafe and check the code, but I seem to recall we had this problem due to originally not properly disposing of the report object.
If you have a report object open (instantiated) and you then reset some parameters, it may not function properly unless you dispose of the object when you next start a "view" process.
So, when you click on a button to regenerate your view of the report, make sure you do something like this;

set objReport = Nothing
set objParams = Nothing

and then provide code to recreate the objects, which should flush the report object and all objects is has created, and then create a clean new object so you can set parameters.

I have created a report based on a report builder model using Visual Studio.
This report will replace the default drill report.
so after I have published my report in report server, I'll modify my model
(model properties) to setup the drill through report of my customer entity.
When I save the new config I receive this error:

/Models/DrillReports/Report1 is not a valid drill report.
so the question is, how to create a valid drill report'
there is some particular parameters to setup?
the help don't describe this.
any sample anywhere?

Report Builder question

Hello there. We are having some problems in Reporting Services.

First off, we are creating a 'Dashboard' project (using Visual Studio 2005, Dundas Charts and SQL Server) that will display charts showing how their company is doing. On the Dashboard, we are also using the Report Builder so the users can create their own reports and see exactly what they want to see.

Before we had a problem with every company being able to access all databases (we wanted to limit it so that their company could ONLY see their data). We fixed that by adding a parameter to the end of the report builder path in the asp .net code.

What we want to do now is limit what directory they can save their reports too. Right now, they are able to save the report in any companies directory.

Remember, this is in Reporting Services, so it's a little different than Windows folder permissions.

If this isn't clear enough, let me know and i'll try to explain it a little clearer.

Folders can be security-controlled using Windows or custom security. If the end user doesn't have rights to a folder, they won't eve see that folder.|||Are you saying that you can use the Windows permissions inside of the SQL Server Reporting Services? I've looked around and have not found anything on how to limit users to specific folders inside of RS.|||Open Report Manager and navigate to any folder. Go to the folder properties and then Security. You can define security policies for Windows users and/or groups.

Report Builder install

We have installed Visual Studio 2005. I made a model and posted it to the report server. My LAN Admin can see the Reports Builder icon on the report server. I do not. I do see my model, but have no ability to click open the report builder. My LAN Admin gave me several permissions, I am admin on my own machine, and I do have .net 2.0 framework installed. Why do I not get the report builder icon on my report server page? ThanksYou need permission to the Execute Report Definitions task, which is included in the System User role by default.

to AllowNull = False, which correctly corresponds with the property of this
field on the SQL Server.
However, I need this table to be replaced with a new named query because I
need to limit the data to only one county, plus I need to link other tables.
When I set it as a query, it changes the property of the Case Number field to
AllowNull = True. Consequently, when I try to deploy it, I get a "Nullable
Property Error".
Is there any way to change the AllowNull property OR prevent this from
happening so that I can deploy the view/model without errors?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

Is Report Builder capable of building any complex reports that Visual Studio Report Designer can build?

What are the limitations of using Report Builder with SQL Server Databases?

Report Designer is the tool for building complex reports. In Report Builder you can only build simple reports such as a single table, matrix or graph.

The value in report builder is in creating fast ad-hoc reports without having to specify a query first. Report Builder is designed to work with SQL databases, but you have to create a model of your database first. You can do this automatically in Report Manager and then customize your model using Model Designer
