Report designer not in VS 2003

I have Reporting services 2000 (Version 8.00.1038.00) installed (installed with installation of MS CRM) and visual studio 2003 installed however, do not have the business intelligence report designer available. Where can I obtain the report designer addin? We don't have a RD 2000 CD. Is what I need available via download?

Thanks

Try getting the trial version of reporting services & installing the developer components. Not sure if these expire though. You may need to purchase a license for Reporting Services if you would like to use in a production environment. There doesn't appear to be a download for just the designer components for vs 2003, only 2005 Express.

http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=BA517C01-2E2F-4BC7-84AF-149B7637F807&displaylang=en

Or you may be able to use fyiReporting or a "common text editor" though I'm not sure who has enough time to edit RDL by hand.

from the CRM tutorial:

For information on installing Report Designer, see Chapter 24 of the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Implementation Guide.

http://www.microsoft.com/dynamics/crm/using/customizing/reporttutorial.mspx

From Chapter 24.

For instructions on writing Reporting Services reports for Microsoft CRM, see the Report Writers Guide
section in the Microsoft CRM 3.0 Software Development Kit (SDK).

From the Report Writers Guide:

To write reports, Visual Studio .NET 2003 (or Visual Studio 2005) and Report Designer (a component of SQL Reporting Services) is the recommended development environment. These tools must be installed on the computer where the reports are authored. Visual Studio is the primary tool used to create or modify reports. You must also have access to Microsoft CRM to deploy the report.

Not a lot of help there! Did you try using CRM CD?

Andrew

Report Designer installation location

We are installing Reporting Services 2000 on a new SQL Server 2000 box and
get a message indicating that Visual Studio 2003 needs to be installed,
otherwise it will install RS2000 without Report Designer.
We currently have RS2000 installed on a SQL Server box with VS2003 and it
works fine.
This time we would like to do it differently and install RS2000 on a SQL
Server 2000 box, but install VS2003 on a development workstation. How can we
do this and still get Report Designer installed on the workstation? Don't we
need RD to get all the RS controls, etc?
Thanks,

If I recall, the Report Designer for the 2000 version requires Visual
Studio to be installed on the same box. This is not the case in SSRS
2005, since it installs the Business Intelligence Development Studio
Environment (which includes the Report Designer) as long as SQL Server
2005 is on the local box. Most likely, you will need to install VS
2003. Sorry that I could not be of greater assistance.

Report Designer Installation

We already have the Report Server installed. However, I am trying to find the software that needs to be installed on the client (development) machine that has VS.NET 2003. I have been searching the web but in vain?.

Does it come only as a part of the server version. Or Is there a Report Designer add-in available for VS.NET 2003 that could be downloaded seperately.

Sathya

what are you trying to do ?

all you would need to develop reports using RS is VS.NET. You would however need IIS,SQL Server to deploy them.

|||

Well but were do you get or download the add-in to setup the Report Designer in VS.NET 2003 (development machine). I dont think, the report designer gets installed by default when VS.NET 2003 is installed.

Sathya

Report designer client component?

I have seen reference to the above component - can anyone
please tell me what it is? Is it an optional part of
VS2003 installation?
TIA,
JBReport Designer is SQL Server 2000 Reporting Service's report authoring
tool. It is hosted within the Visual Studio 2003 .NET shell. This means that
you have to have some component (VB .NET satisfies this requirement) of VS
2003 .NET on your machine prior to install Report Designer

Report Designer

I installed RS on a SQL 2K server. Installation went fine. I didn't
install the Report Designer since I have VS.NET on my XP box. However when
I open VS.NET I don't see Business Intelligence project. Does it need to
install as add-on in VS.NET?
Thx.found it in RS installation CD.
I never use VS.NET. Pure SQL DBA :-(

Report deployment without VS

Hi!
I created several reports and I want to give them to several persons for the installation on

their SQL Server 2005. Is it possible to create something like an

installation package (similar to the deployment manifest in SSIS)?
Thanks for any help!

Check out the PublishSampleReports.rss script in the C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Samples\Reporting Services\Script Samples folder.

You can use it with the rs.exe tool to automatically publish an RDL definition to a server. To use it, your user will have to type a command, however.

If you *totally* want to automate deployment of reports you could do so by creating an MSI which uses a custom action: That custom action would essentially call the same commands as in the script above...It seems like a lot of work to me, though.

|||You can use Reporting Services Scripter to do this. Simply select the reports + datasource you want to distribute (and probably the folder too) and generate the scripts. You can then supply the generated scripts/rdl + batch file to them and all they have to do is change the servername and run the batchfile.|||

...and Jasper's reply reminds me that you can also now script this stuff right from SQL Managment Studio just like you could script tables, views, etc. back in 2000.

Launch SSMS, connect to your Report Server, then right-click the object you want to distribute and click Script.

Report Builder in integrated mode

Hi,

I have an installation with Reporting Services in integrated mode with WSS 3.0, with Reporting Services Add-in for SharePoint.

I have a document library in witch I added a data source to an SSAS database and a Report model on top of this. When I click Add a Report with Report Builder, the report builder opens, but it fails to connect to the model.

There is a dialog window "Select Site or Server "asking for a URL. I put in there http://localhost, but is not working. I am not able to connect to the report model.

I will appreciate any help on what could be the reason or how can I investigate this.

Thanks,

Dan

P.S.

I did the same scenario on the development environment it works from start, without any problems. But now on production ….

Hi Dan

Try using your machine name instead of http://localhost, ie. http://mymachine. There is a known issue with using "localhost" in Reporting Services in sharepoint.

If that does not work, make sure all your permissions are set correctly in sharepoint. Report Builder will only find models to which you have permission.

You can also double check that your model loads by clicking on its context menu in sharepoint and launching Report Builder from there instead of the new menu.

Also SQL SP2 will be available very soon. Please upgrade if you can since the SP2 contains all the latest Sharepoint improvements for Reporting Services.

Hi,
Does anyone have similar error for Report Builder? It seems odd for the

In my case it looks like a security related issue. I gave my account
all possible rights on the report server but no luck.
Radu|||HI, Radu.
Yes, I searched the KB for support but no luck.
I use the standalone server but no active directory.. not sure it relates to
security rights.
One throught may be related to the ASP.NET app pool is running under
NetworkService? it may not have access right to run Report Builder for the
users?
kenny|||I'm not sure if this will work for you but I managed to get report builder to
work on my servers, both development and production. I changed so many
things that I cannot say for certain this is what has to be done, but I
thought it might give you a direction.
The error indicates that it is a permission problem even though everything
seems to be set properly, right? In my scenario I've got Anonymous access
disabled and basic authentication configured, Integrated Windows
authentication is deselected. All of these settings are the same on the
report server, report manager, and report builder virtual directories and
even the files underneath each directory.
Here's what I did, I opened c:\program files\Microsoft SQL
Server\MSSQL.2\Reporting Services\Report Server\web.config
I edited the web.config file to reflect forms authentication instead of
Windows and told it not to impersonate
<authentication mode="Forms" />
<identity impersonate="false" />
I saved the file and opened https://www.server.com/reports - it of course
errored because the server is not configured for forms authentication. I
then reset the Web.Config file back to the original configuration
<authentication mode="Windows" />
<identity impersonate="true" />
Save the Web.config file
Open IIS and navigate to Web Sites | Default Web Site | ReportServer |
ReportBuilder
Right click ReportBuilder.application
Click Properties
Click File Security
Click Edit under Authentication and Access Control
Select Integrated Windows Authentication
Leave the Basic Authentication option selected as well if already selected.
Click OK
Repeat the above steps for ReportBuilder.exe and ReportBuilder.exe.manifest
From a workstation, not the server console
Browse to https://www.server.com/reports log in click Report Server
Click Report Builder and login again.
Report Builder opens
If you want you can then go back and remove the Integrated Windows
Authentication on ReportBuilder.exe.manifest and Reportbuilder.exe. Do not
change Reportbuilder.application or reportbuilder will not work.
I'm not sure what security holes I may have opened, but at least its working
for now.
Let me know if this works for you.

Report and other controls not rendered

After resolving all the installation and configuration related issues, I was able to deploy a couple of projects on my report server. I can see alll folders and reports listed inside the folders from http://<servername>/reports . All works fine except when I run a report, the http://<servername>/Reports/Pages/Report.aspx page does not render report.

This page displays View, Properties, History Subscriptions etc, menu items on the top section of the page. It also displays Home, My Subscriptions, Site Settings, Help etc. links on top right corner of the page. I can also see the bar that has "New subscription" button. But the problem starts from the section below that. It does NOT display the Report navigation bottons (like First page button, Next Page button, previous page button, Last page button, print button etc.) Appears that the icons images for these bottons are missing. And above all, the page does not render report.

IE browser status indicate the following error:

error:'HoevrImagectl161_ctl01_ctl01_ctl06_ctl01' is null or not an object.

The report renders fine via http://<servername>/ReportServer/Pages/ReportViewer.aspx

I may not have explained the problem well here however, if you are interested, I can email you the screenshot of Report.aspx to help you understand the problem.

Any help is appreciated!!!

It seems you are using MOSS. Are you you have installed Sharepoint addon for Reporting Services found at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=1E53F882-0C16-4847-B331-132274AE8C84&displaylang=en

If you have. Have tou configured the reporting services in central admin - Application Settings?

If you have make sure in VS2005 you have deployed to the correct MOSS site collection and correct MOSS library and that is where you view your reports.

In MOSS the reports should render using RSViewerPage.aspx

Thanks

No. I am not running MOSS on this machine. Any other thought?

Woohhaaa!!!!!!!!! Figured that out.

It was a javascript error - "RSController.

Make sure your Reports website has the following seeting:

Right click "Reports" website on IIS manager

Go to Properties

Click on Virtual Directory tab

Click on Configuration button

In "wildcard Application Maps.." section, you should have the latest version of aspnet_isapi.dll file listed. If not listed, insert the file. Usually, the file is located at C:\Windows\Microsft.NET\Framework\<your version folder>\aspnet_isapi.dll

Now, click on "Edit" button. Make sure "Verify that File exixts" checkbox is UNCHECKED.

Click "ok" and exit out of Report properties dialogue box. Your reports should work now without IIS throwing any RSController or PramasCtl, imagehower etc. related errors.

Replication, Log Shipping and Backup

Hi there all.
In my installation there is a main online DB which replicates
some of its data with transactional replication to another DB.
I also use log shipping so that there is always a stand by server
for my main DB.
1. With this installation, can I still keep backing up my log every
half an hour as I used to before log shipping? I would feel much more
safer if I could. Is there a way to do it?
2. Log shipping uses log backups, so it truncate the log every time
it posts changes to the standby server, is that correct?
Thank you all in advance.
George
1) yes, but you might want to back it up more frequently as replication
writes to the log too - not much, but some.
2) it doesn't truncate, but it does back it up.
