Report Designer RDL Generator APIs

I'm just wondering - is there a way to use MS Report Designer's API's to
generate the actual RDL file with all groupings, sortings, etc., as it is
done using the Report Wizard. I know, there is an example to generate a
simple RDL file, using XmlTextWriter approach to generate a file manualy
from scratch, but when it comes to multiple groupings , it seems too complex
to achive that goal. The idea is to simulate web based report designer,
allow the end user to choose columns, group and sort fields and to generate
a report on fly.
Any ideas?
Thanks. No, nothing about this is documented. However, in RS 2005 there will be two
product, the current Report Designer and Report Builder. Report Builder is
an end user tool. Here are some links (note that RS 2005 comes out in
November).

Report Dataset is lost once the Data Tab is clicked

1. Created a New Report Server Wizard Project using OLAP as datasource
2. Gone through the wizard steps to generate a matrix report.
3. All is fine and the report gets previewed. I build and deploy the report.
4. Now , if I need to add a new column I go to data tab of the report. Realize that the query is lost and now the report throws exception like the following when rebuild:

" [rsFieldReference] The Value expression for the textbox ‘Base_Premium’ refers to the field ‘Base_Premium’. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."
5. No idea why the query given at the query builder stage of the wizard is lost

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Create a new Report Server Wizard Project
2. Create a new datasource using OLAP as datasource
3. Add the report data fields (query builder)
4. Select matrix report format and any style
5. Select the row, col and data fields.
6. complete the wizard.
7. Save, build and deploy the project
8. Preview the report.
9. Now try to add a new column to the report by clicking the data tab.

Actual Results:

The sql prepared from the query builder is lost and all the columns previously selected disappear. The report throws exception in preview mode something like :

" [rsFieldReference] The Value expression for the textbox ‘Base_Premium’ refers to the field ‘Base_Premium’. Report item expressions can only refer to fields within the current data set scope or, if inside an aggregate, the specified data set scope."

Expected Results:

Should be able to modify the report any number of times after it is initially generated.

Report creates extra page

I have a report that should only generate 2 pages but generates 3.
Group 1 of the report has 41 rows
Group 2 of the report has 52 rows
When the report is generated, Group 1 creates Page 1, Group 2 creates Page 2
"and" Page 3. Page 2 has 46 rows and the remainder of the rows (6) overflow
to page 3.
Is there a limit? Or is there some setting somewhere to control this?
TIAThere is an option under the properties of the table/matrix to "fit on one
page if possible". Also at the top with file, edit, view....there is Report,
then report properties. Under the layout, the length of the page determines
how many objects can fit.

I checked the "fit on one page if possible", this is checked. Also, with
the Layout properties of the Report, Page width: 11in. Page height:8.5in.
(for Landscape printing) Isnt this just for the printing of the report?
thanks again.

but created a problem with printing landscape. Any ideas where to go from

it to fit. It will have to be longer to fit on the page, or make the typing
smaller to fit everything on the same size page. You could try keeping the
page size the same and making the margins less to fit a little more
information on the page.

object in the header of my report. The textbox would 'hang' on the margin and
would force and extra page. Adjusting the size and or placement of header
items seemed to fix it. (also footer)

It seemed to be that my sub report changes would not show up when previewing the main report. Once I had saved and previewed the sub reports, then clicked the refresh button when previewing the parent report, the changes finally showed up and the extra page went away... hooray!
Good luck with this nasty proble

Report consuing a SSIS package

Has anyone had success in getting a report to generate by using an SSIS
package as it's data source? If so - can you share how you got it to work -
a couple of us who are pretty able bodied can't seem to get it to work as
Microsoft reports it should.Just visit this site for a very good hands on
http://blogs.msdn.com/bimusings/archive/2006/07/19/671743.aspx and ofcourse
MSDN for configuration as well.
I have tried it, its working fine.

Report Builder: Display Hyperlink

Using the Report Builder, the users need to generate a report in which one of the columns should have a hyperlink that navigates to a particular aspx page.

Now, I am able to provide for a hyperlink enabled column from the static reports designed using the Report Server Project. I have used the Navigation --> Jump To URL property of TextBox for this.

But the users dont want to depend on static reports and need this to be available via Report Builder.

I tried to provide for the <a href="somepage.aspx">xxx</a> from the named query in the datasource view, but when I run the report, the Reporting Service HTMLEncodes the tags and displays everything as text.

Is there a way to generate a hyperlink using Report Builder.

I'd linke to know the answer to the same question: How can you display a hyperlink in a report built using the Report Builder (NOT the report designer). Even a simple textbox that embeds a single url would be nice.... how can this be done?

Report Builder TOP1

I am trying to use report builder to generate a report that has multiple transaction. All I need is the most recent. normally I would use a select top1 in SQL but can not find anything in report builder that can accompish the same thing. Any ideas would be greatly appreciatedHat about using a named query in the DSV with the TOP 1 and order by clause in it.

report builder ad hoc reporting

Using SS2000 data with RS2005. If I build a report with report builder, is
there a way to see what query the report builder is using to generate the
report? I've built a model and created a report from the model. If I create a
query in query analyzer to check the results that are generated by the report
builder report, I'm off by quite a bit. If I could see the query that the
report builder is generating maybe I could figure out where the problem is.
Thanks,

Dan D.Take a look at the RDL file. You can either save this file to disk using the
Report Builder File : Save To File menu option.

section that had the column names. Do you think the query itself is in there?

database.
Also report builder can log the query:

good luck.

the simple query of all the columns and the filter condition. You can have a
look at the report model table as well.

using linked tables - going against Oracle directly.

report as side by side records display

I want to generate a report for information related to different libraries. It is required to print two library information (two records) side by side in a page. I do not know how to do so.like

libraray name: abc libraray name: abc
address: abc address:abc
phone:30 phone:abc

best regards
kashifIf there is a link between these table, then u can use linking concept and retrieve data from any of the tables.

If not, try to look at the sub reports concept. May be helpful to you.

Replication: Initial snapshot takes too long

i'm trying to make a replication work, i've done everything but the initial
snapshot takes too long to generate (the database size is like 20 GB).
I made a backup of the database and restored it in the suscription server,
and then configured the replication. I thought that as both databases were
the same, there wouldn't be any "big" initial snapshot" but there is, and
it's very big...
how can i setup a replication having both databases with the same data and
tables and everthing, with no initial snapshot (ie. not copy tables and the
data in those tables, cos i don't need it) ?
well, thanks for reading me.
:-)Take a look at this link, you may want to initialize your subscription
without a snapshot which looks like what you are looking for.
http://msdn2.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms151705.aspx
You better send your posts related to Replication to sqlserver.replication
NG rather than others. You get better answers there.
