Report Bulilder & Report Designer (Comp matrix)
Is there any comparison matrix available online between Report Builder &
Report Designer (VS2005)? If yes, can you please redirect me to it?
Thanks,
RohitAlso, I want to know if the reports designed in Report Designer can be
opened in Report Builder. If we cannot, then, are there any alternatives? I
want to give an option (to the client) to modify reports created via Report
Designer without using 3rd party report designer tools or VS2005. Is this
really possible?
I also want to the limitations of Report Builder.
Thanks,
Rohit

Here's a link to a general comparison between the 2.

Also, can the data model created in VS2005 used in Report Builder (without
losing all the Calculated Members)?

Report Builder not available?
Hi,
I have just installed Sql Server 2005 Express Adv. Services and
found out that the Report Builder is not accessible.
Is it not possible at all to get Report Builder together with
Sql Server 2005 Express?
If not, are there any other way to create reports instead of the
Report Designer in Business Intelligence Development Studio?
Kind Regards,
Blixt
Report Builder is available in Workgroup, Standard and Enterprise editions of SQL Server 2005
(see http://www.microsoft.com/sql/technologies/reporting/rsfeatures.mspx )
|||Ok, thanks. So if our customers wants to create reports they will
either need to use the Report Designer in Business
Intelligence Development Studio or upgrade to one
of the SQL Server editions you mentioned above?
Or are there other (free) alternatives for the Express
edition?
|||
yep, spot on
report builder good for giving non techie users some basic reprot creation skills, BIDS use for model creation, and advanced reporting, standard report publishing etc.
if your customers are using this then its a production environment so its gonna be workgroup/std or enterprise edtn. i doubt express will meet needs, its similar concept to msde.
to my knowledge there is are no other free versions, express just used for trial of the basics and low usage db.

|||Ok, thanks. It's a pity and strange that the Report Builder isn't available for the
Express Edition. The BIDS is too advanced for practically all of our
customers, RB would have been perfect.
Can't have it all I guess :)

report builder - need help reporting from multiple tables
relationship). When I go into report builder, I see both entities
available for me. When I click one of the entities, I am able to select
that entities data items to drag onto my report. However, the other
entity disapears. If I delete all the fields from the report, both
entities are available again. So it appears as if I can have as many
entities defined as I want, but can only use one at a time to report
on. I know I am doing something wrong because I have seen samples that
do what I am looking for - I just can't figure out how to do it.its because you don't have relationship between your 2 tables.
if you have some relation, in this case you can go from table A to table B
"directly"
else you have to go through other shared tables (with unexpected results)

reporting services model. Do I need to depict it somewhere else or am I
missing setting a property or something?|||Once the ralationships are defined in the datasource view, that is all
it takes. Report builder recognizes the relationship and will let you
select from both tables. If the tables are not joined in the datasource
view, then you will only be able to select attributes from one table or
the other - but not both.

Report Builder
OK so I've developed quite a few reports using report server projects. Now I'd like to see what is available to the end-user after I, as a developer, am sick to tears of making and customizing reports. So I went to Report Builder.
I open Report Builder and see the list of my five entities. Then when I drag and drop a field from one of the entities to the report designer, ALL of the four other entities DISAPPEAR!
Can you not design a report in Report Builder using fields from multiple entities? The design of our databases have much to be desired, so that would make using Report Builder impossible...
Am I missing something here?
Yes, sure you can, if you previously defined the entities and relationship accordingly on either the database or the dsv laterone you should see the right relationships in the report model view. Did you have a look on the sample project with the Adventureworks database ?

I must still be missing something (most likely in the setup of the report model).
I'm not sure how to define the entities and relationships properly so that I can drag and drop fields from multiple entities. When I drop one of the fields, all of the other entities (except for the one that I grabbed the field from) disappear.
It seems that I haven't set up the relationships at all...? How do I do this?
Wait a minute, I think I see it.
I have to set the relationships in the view.
|||Ok, I defined the relationships between the tables in the view. I build and run the report model project.
Then when I run report builder and drag and drop a field, all of the other entities still disappear. When I delete the field, they all come back. Why is this?
|||Report Builder operates with Report Model - this is semantic model that describes your database in terms of entities, attributes and relationships between entities. In short, an entity usually represents a table, entity attributes are table columns (or expressions that include columns). Database relationships are represented as roles on entities (db relship is visible as two roles in semantic model). For example you may have two entities: Customers and Orders. Each customer may have multiple orders, each order may have one customer. In your database, when you want to ask question about customers and orders, you would join the two tables thus employing Customer-Order relship. In semantic model you will see two entities instead of tables and each entity will have a role that points to another entity (Customer entity will have role "Customer Orders" and Order entity will have role "Customer").
Now when you open report builder, initially you will see all entities. When you put one entity on the surface you start building your question (or report) in the context of this entity. So at this point the flat list of entities disappears and you see your base entity at the root. You also see all attributes of that entity and all roles going from that entity. Now if you want to reach for some attribute in another entity you will need to navigate thru roles (clicking on them) to the desired entity.
When you build (generate) your semantic model, Model Designer will create entities for tables that have primary keys. Model Designer will also autogenerate roles for relationships based on PK-FK constraints. If your tables do not have primary keys, foreign keys you can always add them in Model Designer prior to generating the model.
Report based on a Date
I have to create a report for all the business days in a current month. (no matter the records are available or not in the database for the day).
If you have any idea, pls tell me
ThanksCan you be a little more specific? Do you need a separate report for each day, or do you need one report that will show all the days in the month regardless if there's a record?|||Thanks Malleyo!
The second condition in your post is my report.
My report should display all the business days in the current month and the corresponding sum of amounts from a table which contains a date field. The sum is grouped by the date for each day.
The problem here is the table doesn't contain records for all the days upto end of the month. But I have to display all the days. Now I'm using a dummy table which contains all the business days and linking this with my main table using left outer join so that I'm able to display all the dates.
But I think this is not the right way to do this?
Ex report is
Date Amount
6/1 100
6/2 50
6/3 90
6/4 150
6/7
6/8
...
...
...
6/30
Ex. The problem is table contains data upto 6/4. So while generating the report it shows the report upto 6/4. But I need upto 6/30 even though the amount field is empty.
Thanks|||I'm using a dummy table which contains all the business days and linking this with my main table using left outer join so that I'm able to display all the dates.
Joining the 2 tables sounds good to me.
Try using a Group for Date. Make sure that you don't have 'SuppressIfBlank' turned on. Make sure that the query you're running is really returning all the info you need.|||Thanks Malleyo,
One more things, I'm using MySQL as my database. While linking the tables using left outer join, it is not working properly. It returns the result of inner join.
Actually my first table contains all the business days and the second table contains records for some of the days. I linked the table on date field using left outer join. It has supposed to return all the days in the first table regardless of second table. But it 's not. It's returning only the matching records.
Any idea please,|||You may be doing the wrong kind of Join. Unfortunately I don't know a whole lot about Joins, and the knowledge that I do have is for SQL Server 7 (which I'm not sure if uses different syntax than MySQL.
Here's what my Joins typically look like:
SELECT * FROM Table1 AS T1
LEFT JOIN Table2 AS T2 ON T2.Column1 = T1.Column1
That will return all the fields in Table1 with any that match in Table2 (or NULL if there isn't a match in Table2).|||I'm also new to mysql.
I'm using the same conventions as given in mysql documentation.
My query is
select table1.date,table2.date,table2.amount from table1 left join table2 on table1.date = table2.date where table2.code = '111'
This is not working
But
select table1.date,table2.date,table2.amount from table1 left join table2 on table1.date = table2.date and table2.code = '111'
This works but it takes so much time to read the records. sometime just hung up. My table1 contains just 22 records.
While adding as tables, it's not working.|||Do you have indexes on table1.date, table2.date, and table2.code? If not, add the indexes and it should speed it up. If you already have indexes, then I'm out of ideas. You can try posting that question on another forum or search www.google.com or something.

Report Activity Tracking
We would like to track user activity on our reports, has anyone done
this before? Are there any best practicies available?
We are considering a couple of options but I thought I'll ask the
clever people as well :)
(If this is a duplicate post, please ignore, I'm battling with IE7...)If you are using SRS 2005 then you can download the SQL Server 2005 samples
off of the SQL Server Microsoft website.
After installing there is a folder with report samples, inside that another
one called "Server management Sample Reports"
There is a DB script and a new style DTS (integration Service) package, and
some reports. Which show execution of reports by whom, success, parameters
etc...

Thanks for the advice. After looking at the Samples you mentioned I
found the ExecutionLog table in the ReportServer database, which
contained all the information I was after.
Thanks
